Nadine Karema Appointed as the Next Executive Director of Partners In Health Rwanda

Kigali, November 13, 2023 - Partners In Health is delighted to announce the appointment of Nadine Karema as the forthcoming Executive Director of Partners In Health Rwanda (PIH), known locally as Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB). Nadine assumes this crucial role following Dr. Joel M. Mubiligi, who has been promoted to Chief Innovation & Growth Planning Officer in charge of setting a strategic organizational vision for growth planning and build the capacity for growth and innovation across all 11 PIH country offices as well as the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda.


Commencing her tenure since November 6, 2023, Nadine Karema brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Formerly serving as the Deputy Executive Director, Nadine worked closely with the outgoing Executive Director to provide comprehensive leadership for the PIH/IMB mission and strategic plan in Rwanda. Since joining PIH/IMB in 2013, Nadine has held various key positions, including Health Information Systems (HIS) Manager, HIS Director, Informatics Director, and Chief Informatics Officer. Her primary focus throughout her career has been on enhancing processes and systems stimulating data-driven decision-making, and fostering capacity-building for strategic alignment. In addition to her strategic role at PIH/IMB, Nadine actively has contributed to the University of Global Health Equity Executive Education program as a Digital Health expert and Leadership instructor. Moreover, she has provided technical assistance to the Rwanda Ministry of Health (MOH) as the PIH/IMB focal point within the Digital Health Technical Work Group and served as the co-chair of the National e-Learning Committee for both the organization and Rwanda health sector NGOs.

Nadine holds an MBA in International Business and Organizational Leadership with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems and Technology and. Prior to joining PIH/IMB, she held various positions at the University of California-San Diego and also imparted her knowledge by teaching undergraduate courses in Computer Programming and Business at California career colleges.

Dr. Sheila Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Partners In Health, affirms, "With over 10 years of hands-on program implementation experience and her background in leading decision-support systems for our medical and moral missions, Nadine will continue to build upon the incredible work taking place in Rwanda - from government partnership to community-based care. Nadine’s commitment to serve the most vulnerable and demonstrated insight into how we can best serve them have positioned her as a thoughtful and trusted leader among IMB staff and a reliable collaborator among partners."

PIH/IMB has been actively engaged in Rwanda since 2005 to contribute towards the government's efforts of health system strengthening. The organization is now supporting with technical assistance and provision of high-quality healthcare in a catchment area of 47 health facilities serving over 1,000,000 people across three districts.
